Environmental improvement works begin in the Somme

For to accompany the construction of the CanalThe Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company is implementing developments designed to promote biodiversity and enrich the natural habitats of fauna and flora.
In Santerre Haute-Somme, a total of 420 hectares of environmental facilities is planned.

In this area, the first developments began at the end of October in the valley at Veaux, located north of the town of Étricourt-Manancourt.
In the Somme and Omignon valleys, the improvements begin this November. They will continue until March 2026 at the various sites.

The improvements in the valley at Veaux

In the valley at Veaux, in Étricourt-Manancourt, an area of ​​approximately 5 000m² is concerned.
The project aims to create a network of five ponds. Each with a surface area of ​​100 m² and a depth of 1 meter, they will allow for the creation of alternative habitatsreplacing those located on the Canal route

An additional pond will be created later in Moislains., following the same logic of creating habitats favorable to protected species.

Developments in the Somme Valley

In the Somme Valley, 85,3 hectares : will undergo ecological restoration work on a site spanned by the Somme Canal Bridge. More specifically, two sites are involved:

  • “Pont-Canal” located in Cléry-sur-Somme, Biaches and Péronne (84,8 hectares)
  • “Bois de la Ville” located in Biaches (0,5 hectares)

The work undertaken at both sites aims to preserve and develop the biodiversity of aquatic, wetland and wooded environments in :

  • Restaurant and by creating open wetlands
  • Creating new woodlands using local species (smooth elm, black alder, pedunculate oak…)
  • Fighting against invasive exotic species (walnut and giant hogweed, Buddleia davidii…)

Operations related to the preservation and relocation of certain protected plant and animal species are also planned prior to the construction of the Somme Canal Bridge.

Construction update: environmental improvements - Somme Valley

The developments in the valleys of the Somme and the Omignon

In the Somme and Omignon valleys, these are 16,9 hectares : who are affected by this work. It will be carried out on three sites:

  • “Bois de la Chapelle” in Ennemain (1,9 hectares)
  • “Le Marais du Vivier” in Saint-Christ-Briost (5,4 hectares)
  • “Les Eaux” in Villers-Carbonnel (9,6 hectares)

At all three sites, the work undertaken aims to restore the natural environments concerned by:

  • Targeted maintenance of shrubby vegetation within reedbeds
  • Creating open wetlands
  • Restoring the habitats of heritage species such as the Little Bittern or the Marsh Harrier
  • Promoting the reception of the Common Tern by installing a nesting raft.

What are the next steps ?

For the ponds, after the work planned for 2025 and 2026, a year will be devoted to...natural evolution of the areaThus, the pond will be fully functional by spring 2027 to accommodate the species, which will be transferred during planned safeguarding operations before the start of the major construction work on the Canal.

In the Somme and Omignon valleys, following the planned works this autumn and next winter, Finalization and maintenance work will be carried out in 2026 and 2027 to complete and perfect the facilities. and a Ecological monitoring will then be carried out by the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company, before the site is taken over in the long term (30 years) by a dedicated manager.

Starting in the fall of 2026, new developments will begin in the Ingon Valley, in the municipalities of Herly, Curchy, and Nesle, continuing the same approach of preserving and restoring natural environments. More detailed information will be provided at the start of these operations.
