4 inland ports will line the route of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal. Located in the Noyon, Nesle, Péronne and Marquion-Cambrai sectors, they will be the gateway for the local economic fabric to the Seine-Escaut network. They will be at the heart of a genuine European multimodal hub, connected to the seaports and river terminals of the Seine, those already present in Hauts-de-France, and those of Northern Europe.
These ports will thus become a essential tool of the ecological transition by allowing the transfer of a significant portion of freight transport from road to river. Each site will be at least bimodal, and even trimodal for the ports of Nesle and Marquion-Cambrai which will benefit from a rail connection. The port terminals will be multi-purpose for container activities, solid and liquid bulk, heavy parcels; the areas allocated within the terminals to these different traffics will be adaptable and scalable.
The activity zones will be diversified, welcoming logistics, industries practicing modal shift and business services.
These new logistics infrastructures will integrate the principles of REV3 in the areas of digital technology, resource savings, energy and mobility. Their design was guided by ambitions of landscape, architectural and environmental quality (HQE sustainable development certification) and land sobriety.
A broad study program has been carried out since 2020 by the Hauts-de-France Region in partnership with the local authorities concerned and the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (in charge of building the quays), aiming to design the port facilities and specify the necessary interfaces with the Canal.
Very broad ongoing consultation with the project stakeholders enabled the development of development plans and then the further development of site plans.
Overall, the inland ports of the Canal represent 2 linear meters of quays et more than 330 hectares of port terminals and spaces for setting up activities.
They are designed on the same principle, according to 3 parts with distinct vocations (quay, port terminal, activity zone).
The choice of a single governance for the 4 ports of the Canal, through the creation of the Joint Syndicate of Inland Ports in August 2023, allows for coordinated management of the sites across the port axis.
The timetable for the construction of inland ports is aligned with that of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, with current work starting in 2027 for commissioning by 2030.
In addition to the 4 inland ports, 6 nearby quays industrial or cereal, to load and unload the boats, will also be set up in Thourotte, Ribécourt-Dreslincourt and Pimprez (Oise), Languevoisin-Quiquery, Moislains (Somme) and Graincourt-lès-Havrincourt (Pas-de-Calais). They will be managed, like the Canal, by Voies navigables de France.
