Start of work on the Aubencheul-au-Bac quay

February 3, 2025

In Aubencheul-au-Bac (59), construction work on the temporary quay is starting on the Sensée canal, at the intersection with the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal. The Spie Batignolles group of companies, responsible for its construction, is working on site since 3st February 2025.

What will it be used for, what are the different stages of work, how will the construction take place? Explanations.

Why build a temporary works quay in Aubencheul-au-Bac?

This 121-metre-long quay will supply the construction site of the future Oisy-le-Verger lock with construction materials. It is of particular interest since it will allow transport by barge, rather than by road, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
One of the major challenges of a large-scale project like the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is the management of debris and supplies of materials.
By "fluvializing" the construction site, that is to say by favoring the transport of materials by waterway, the objective is to reduce the ecological footprint of the project: fewer trucks on the roads and, consequently, less nuisance for local residents.
When the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is put into service, the quay will have fulfilled its functions and will then be deconstructed.

Prepare the terrain

Before the start of the construction site, the rights-of-way (construction site areas) must be cleared. To do this, deforestation and clearing operations or demolition of buildings are carried out, archaeological or pyrotechnic excavations are conducted, areas hosting local flora and fauna are protected, the rights-of-way are secured by palisades, etc.
Once the surface area of the right-of-way is ready, the workers install the bungalows which constitute the “base life” of the site and can then begin the civil engineering phase (construction).

What are the stages of construction of the quay?

Step 1: First, a preparatory phase consists of excavating, that is to say removing earth, to create a structure on which the machines can circulate.

Step 2: Personalized sheet piles, steel profiles 10 to 12 metres long, are driven into the ground by vibration using the vibratory driving technique. This step, carried out in March for a maximum duration of one month, will generate noise and vibrations in the immediate vicinity of the work.

Step 3: Once the sheet piles are in place, a concrete crown beam is poured at the top of the main curtain on the emerging part of the sheet pile wall, thus stabilizing the watertight wall over time. dock structure is then carried out.

Step 4: The asphalt works related to the earthwork come to finalize the construction of the quay.

Eight months of work are required to complete these stages, subject to weather conditions and construction site hazards. They take place during working days and hours of the week (Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 13 p.m. to 17 p.m.).
