Exhibition: Archaeological remains of the Oise River around the Canal construction sites

From March 3, 2026 to April 30, 2026

As with any major land development project, archaeological excavations are carried out along the route of the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal before construction begins. The exhibition "Archaeological Remains of the Oise River Around the Canal Construction Sites" invites you to discover exceptional sites and objects unearthed during these digs, from the Mesolithic period to the present day. A fascinating journey into the heart of the region's history.  

Produced in partnership with the Regional Archaeology Service (SRA), responsible for implementing the State's archaeological policy in the Hauts-de-France region, the Oise Departmental Archaeology Service (SDAO) and theNational Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap), the exhibition presents the role of each actor and their interventions on the route of the Canal.

You will be able to discover, for example, the role of SRA coordinator which oversees the process at the regional level, archaeological assessments carried out by the SDAO teams – a preventive archaeology operator working throughout the Oise department – ​​or, for example, discoveries resulting from a Excavation carried out by Inrap in Thourotte.

Beyond the archaeological discoveries presented, the exhibition offers a A closer look at two essential professions to the discipline: the topographer, guarantor of the accuracy of field surveys, and the archaeo-anthropologist, specialist in the study of human bones.

Through the presentation of sites, objects, and scientific accounts, this exhibition offers the public a better understanding of the challenges, methods, and expertise of contemporary archaeology. It also reveals how the major development projects become real opportunities for knowledge of the past.

An afternoon of discussion with the actors

Wednesday April 22, 2026, afternoon, from 14 p.m. to 17 p.m.Several SDAO and Inrap operators who participated in the Canal excavations will be present. Don't miss this opportunity! To ask questions The exhibition covers the artifacts on display, the methods used to create them, the daily lives of the archaeologists, and archaeology in general. It offers something for the curious and passionate, and might even inspire some younger visitors to pursue this field!

Discoveries from the Oise Departmental Commission for Underwater Archaeology

Alongside the exhibition dedicated to archaeological remains from the Seine-Nord Europe Canal construction projects, the Oise Departmental Commission for Underwater Archaeology (CDASO) also presents some of its discoveries, made in the river near the Canal construction sites. These items are displayed on the back wall of the exhibition hall.
