Along the route of the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal, preparatory work for the construction sites will begin between Passel (Oise) and Aubencheul-au-Bac (Nord). These operations are accompanied by measures to reduce or offset the impacts of the work on local wildlife and vegetation. It is within this framework that the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE) is renewing its "Canal Nesting Boxes" initiative, launched in 2022 in the Compiègne area, this time targeting residents of municipalities in sectors 2 to 4.
In 2022, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company launched an appeal to volunteer residents of the municipalities crossed by the Canal in Compiègne, to welcome a birdhouse in their garden to create replacement habitats.
Today, the operation continues in particular in the Somme, for you, residents of the following municipalities:
You have received a leaflet in your mailbox explaining the operation and the registration procedures to receive one of the 1000 nest boxes.
The nest boxes and shelters are made by a regional ESAT (Work Assistance Establishment or Service) and then provided free of charge by the SCSNE.
You will then need to install them in your garden by the beginning of March 2025 at the latest , before the nesting period which extends into the summer.
You will then be able to observe the birds that settle there, learn to recognize them thanks to the bird atlas provided with the nest box (link below), and share with the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe all their observations during the five nesting seasons planned for this operation.
Monitoring will be done via a tracking form to be completed directly online once a year, from 2025 until 2029.
Among the bird species likely to take up residence in the nest boxes, participants will be able to observe the blue tit, the great tit, the marsh tit, the barn swallow and the common swift.
