The Péronne Canal House inaugurated

On Friday, October 3, 2025, many people gathered in Péronne in front of 38 rue Saint-Sauveur to inaugurate the second Canal House along the route . Designated as part of the "Seine-Nord Europe Canal Territories Project"* , the Péronne Canal House is the tangible expression of a territory united behind the ambitious project that the Canal represents.

A place to learn, get informed and exchange ideas

This new space invites you to discover the Canal in all its dimensions (construction, environment, economy, etc.). It features a permanent exhibition , a touchscreen table for navigating the Canal in 3D, and will soon host temporary themed exhibitions.

A true community hub , it also hosts workshops and drop-in sessions. For example, the first visits were organized this Thursday, October 9th , aimed at people far removed from employment and interested in the job and training opportunities generated by the construction project.

“The Canal House symbolizes our collective ambition: to transform a major infrastructure project into a regional opportunity, to make it a driver of development, and above all, to empower everyone to understand and participate in this project.” Éric FRANCOIS, President of the Haute-Somme Community of Municipalities

An inauguration followed by a significant signing

While the Maison du Canal de Péronne was created through a joint effort by the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE) and the Communauté de Communes de la Haute-Somme (CCHS) , with the support of the Hauts-de-France Region and the State , it is part of an even greater cooperation, through the Territorial Development Contract (CTD) of Santerre Haute-Somme , signed on the same day at the Péronne Town Hall.

What is the Territorial Development Contract?

The CTDs are the translation into territories of the Grand Chantier approach . Numbering 3 (Compiégnois-Noyonnais, Santerre-Haute-Somme and Artois-Cambrésis), they reflect the collective ambition by describing the organization and the role of each to make the construction site and the future Canal an opportunity for the territories crossed, and more broadly for the Hauts-de-France region.

They are signed between the State and its operators (France Travail and Voies Navigables de France), the Hauts-de-France Region, the Departments (Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais, Somme), the EPCI and their groups, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and the SCSNE. The Chamber of Agriculture and the Chamber of Trades and Crafts of Hauts-de-France are also signatories.

The objectives of Territorial Development Contracts?

The objective of these CTDs and each of the signatories? To guarantee the territorial integration of the Canal , to make it a lever for the development of the territory , to feed the SCSNE into the choices of design and implementation of the Canal, to establish the partnership framework for the actions to be undertaken and to identify the means to be implemented to achieve this.

These contracts are structured around 4 sections:

  • Part 1: Canalside development (footpaths, cycle paths, Canal House, etc.)
  • Section 2: Economic development, employment, training, integration and site reception
  • Part 3: Organization of the site in relation to the life of the territory
  • Section 4: The future of existing canals (Oise lateral canal and North canal).

The CTD of Santerre Haute-Somme extends well beyond the municipalities crossed by the future Canal , reaching as far as the Amiens Metropolis and the Saint-Quentin Agglomeration, which are also concerned by the expected benefits of the construction site and the Canal when it is in operation (see map above).

In this area, discussions focus in particular on the development of a cycle route in the Somme Valley , cycle loops around the Somme Canal Bridge , or the development of the main service road of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal or the Canal du Nord.

*The “Seine-Nord Europe Canal Territories Project” label is awarded to projects that contribute to economic development, tourist appeal, and the living environment of residents around the future Canal, supported by subsidies paid by the State, the Region and/or the Department concerned, within the framework of the Territorial Development Contract.
