Should we let the forest age? A closer look at islands of senescence

February 24, 2026

Among its environmental protection measures, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company plans to implement compensatory measures such as the planting of over 100 hectares of old-growth forest patches and over 50 hectares of complementary woodland. This practice, highly beneficial for biodiversity, is highlighted in this light.

What is an island of senescence?

Un island of senescence is a forest area where the decision is made not to intervene for a period of 30 years. The trees are left in place and are not cut down.

The goal is to let the forest evolve naturally. as she would without human activity Trees age, some fall, and then gradually decompose. natural functioning, rare in logged forests, allows forobserve all the stages of a forest's life.

Objective: to enrich local biodiversity

The islands of senescence constitute veritable reservoirs of biodiversityAging trees and the deadwood they contain offer a wide variety of cavities, cracks, and natural shelters. microhabitats are essential to many species that depend specifically on mature forests for food, reproduction, or rest.

These environments are particularly favorable to certain forest bats, such as Bechstein's bat (Myotis bechsteinii) or the Greater Horseshoe Bat (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), which use the cavities of old trees as shelters. By keeping these spaces unexploited, the islands of senescence contribute so to species preservation sensitive to and strengthening of local biodiversity.

More than 50 hectares of woodland are needed. near the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal to create islands of old-growth forest. SCSNE will finance the maintenance of these islands in exchange for a commitment from landowners not to cut down any trees for a period of 30 years. Avoid-reduce-compensate measures or accompanying measures?

As part of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal project, numerous measures are implemented in order to preserve biodiversity et natural environmentsThese actions are primarily part of the ERC approach (Avoid, Reduce, Compensate), intended to limit the project's impacts on the environment.

In addition, steps say accompanying are also deployed. Although they do not directly address a specific impact of the project, they strengthen theoverall efficiency of the environmental approach by providing real added value to avoidance, reduction and compensation actions.
