During the winter of 2024-2025, information on the possible presence, in the middle Oise valley, of "Thick Mussels", freshwater bivalves protected at the national level, was reported during an inventory carried out by Voies Navigables de France (VNF) downstream of the works on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal. After informing the State services, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company immediately deployed resources to verify whether this species is present in the areas affected by the Canal development by seeking the opinion of a French malacologist expert and launching a preliminary inventory at the end of 2024.
Capture and release operations involving more than fifty bivalve molluscs were carried out in the area of the Montmacq lock construction site – Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt. These operations were carried out with the assistance of a malacologist and according to a procedure approved by the National Council for the Protection of Nature (CNPN).
These captures of individuals, carried out in close collaboration with government agencies and the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB), allowed for the collection of tissue samples without harming the bivalves and DNA testing in a specialized laboratory to identify the species present. All specimens are Painter's Mussels ( Unio pictorum (Linnaeus, 1758) – Painter's Mussel – Presentation ), a common and non-threatened species, for which the risk of extinction is low (" Least Concern " listed in the national inventory of natural heritage).
And now ?
Work on the Montmacq Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt lock can therefore continue normally.
