The Oise locks

February 2, 2024

Among the 6 locks which will punctuate the navigation of boats on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal (CSNE), 3 are located in the Oise. Discover these structures which will allow boats to cross the terrain of the territory.

The Montmacq lock – Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt

Located in the communes of Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt and Montmacq, this first lock of the route with a height of 6,41 meters, ensures the junction between the downstream and upstream reaches of sector 1. It will now be the only lock to pass through for boats between Compiègne and Pont-L'Évêque. This represents a time saving of half an hour, which, combined with the widening of the waterway allowing a higher speed, will save around an hour of navigation time between Compiègne and Pont-L'Évêque.

The work on this lock was awarded at the end of December 2023 to a group of 8 companies whose agent is Bouygues Travaux Publics Régions France SAS and should start in the first half of 2024.

The Noyon lock

To access the Noyonnais plain, the boats will pass through the Noyon lock, whose drop height of 21,07 meters makes it one of the largest in the CSNE.

The Canal and its structures were designed to fit harmoniously into the characteristic landscape of Noyonnais. The landscape integration of the Noyon lock was also the subject of landscape studies and was worked on in conjunction with the Architect of the Buildings of France of the Oise, in particular to take into account the perspectives on the Notre-Dame de Noyon cathedral, emblematic element of the landscape.

This lock is also one of the 3 locks which will be open to the public with a reception building and a belvedere terrace.

The Catigny lock

The last lock in the Oise, the Catigny lock, with a height of 14 meters, provides access to the Santerre plateau in the Somme and the longest reach of the CSNE of just over 39 kilometers. The developments along the lock were the subject of consultation with residents. Several subjects were thus worked on: insertion of the Catigny lock and the anti-intumescence basin*, creation of a landscaped merlon**, installation of security fences, restoration of roads and paths. The approach implemented in Catigny thus made it possible to improve the integration of the Canal and to arrive at a coherent project that respects the town and its inhabitants.

*Anti-intumescence basin: anti-eddy basin making it possible to maintain the level in the reach of the Canal (portion between two locks) during the cycle of boats passing through a lock.

** Structure used to serve as a visual screen fitted out with landscaped plantings.
