Concession companies are busy preparing the construction sites

Posted on 22 November 2024

The environmental authorization order, issued by the State last August, now allows the start of work on the 89 kilometers of the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal between Passel and Aubencheul-au-Bac. The concessionary companies are already working to divert the networks present on the route before the arrival of the first Canal construction sites.

Before the Canal can be dug, a lot of preliminary work is necessary, including the adaptation or diversion of certain underground or road networks. This initial work is carried out by local authority syndicates or so-called concessionary companies that manage the electricity, water, gas and telecommunications networks.

These works are commissioned and financed by the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe within the framework of agreements with the concessionaires, who are the project owners, in different stages: preliminary studies, where appropriate coordination with the SCSNE project managers, schedules and monitoring of the works.

More than 10 projects are currently underway with the various concessionaires to free up the land required for the work on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal.

Focus on 2 major projects in progress

Diversion of networks in the Somme

Near Nesle, in the Somme, the work to divert the natural gas transmission networks operated by the GRTgaz Company began in September. This project, divided into 4 lots, is of an exceptional nature, due to the multitude of networks to be diverted in a restricted geographical area. All 4 lots should be completed in the first half of 2027.

Focus on the first batch of work that began with the construction of a 20-meter diameter and 10-meter deep shaft that will allow the launch of 4 micro-tunnel boring machines. The micro-tunnel boring machines will dig the galleries through which the 2 diverted gas pipes will pass. Indeed, on the one hand they will have to cross the current and future SNCF track and on the other hand the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal and the diverted RD930. This first part of the work will be completed at the end of 2025.

Bypass works underway on the A2 motorway

In Pas-de-Calais, in Ytres, the first works carried out by SANEF began at the end of September with the construction of a temporary 2x2 lane diversion on the A2 motorway. It will allow traffic to be maintained throughout the construction of a 120 m long viaduct over which the A2 motorway will eventually pass to cross the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal by 2027.
