In order to promote the supply and evacuation of materials from the Seine-Nord Europe Canal (CSNE) construction sites by river and thus limit truck traffic, the construction of the Canal relies on current navigable infrastructure; the lateral canal to the Oise and the canal du Nord. Thus, the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe is developing several quays dedicated to CSNE work on these canals, close to the construction sites.
In the south of the route, the first two quays located in Ribécourt-Dreslincourt and Pimprez were completed in 2021-2022. Positioned on the Oise lateral canal which will be widened and deepened to become the CSNE, they are already being used as part of the works (and reserved exclusively for this purpose for the time being).
The Pimprez quay, for example, made it possible to evacuate wood from deforestation carried out to free up the CSNE rights-of-way and is also used as part of the construction of the RD 40 bis bridge. The Ribécourt-Dreslincourt quay, in addition to its proximity to the construction site, is also close to a railway line which is the subject of connection work in conjunction with SNCF Réseau to enable multimodal logistics.
In the Noyon area, a quay was built in Noyon in 2025, the construction of a quay in Catigny begins in September 2026 and an existing quay in Pont l'Évêque will be redeveloped by the end of 2026.
Sheet piles , steel profiles approximately 12 meters long, are driven into the ground by vibration (vibratory driving) and sometimes, depending on the soil type, with the aid of a pneumatic hammer (a sliding weight on a mast). They form a barrier that contributes to the watertightness of the Canal.
A counter-curtain , made up of smaller steel profiles 4 to 5 meters long, is created a few meters from the sheet pile wall according to the size of the quay.
The area between the sheet piles (main wall) and the counter-wall is excavated to install tie rods (metal bars) in the ground to ensure the connection between the steel profiles and thus stabilize the entire structure.
The materials between the canal and the new quay are excavated, then various equipment is installed on the quay, such as :
* The techniques used to construct transshipment quays vary depending on the soil characteristics . The steps explained above correspond to the construction phases of the Pimprez and Ribécourt-Dreslincourt quays. The construction of the Noyon work quay will not include phases 2 and 3 (installation of the counter-curtain and tie rods) because the favorable soil conditions do not require these reinforcements.
