The territories at the helm of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal

Published on 2 April 2020

Until now a public state establishment, the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe has been since 1er April 2020 a local public institution.

In the fall of 2017, Xavier Bertrand, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe, initiated a real partnership between the territories and the State. The culmination of this partnership was materialized by the integration into the mobility orientation law, known as LOM, of December 24, 2019, of an article making the Project Company a local public establishment piloted by local authorities. from 1er April 2020.

What does this actually change? Local authorities now hold the majority of seats on the supervisory board. This governance allows a strong integration of the project in the territories served and listening to everyone's expectations. The State remains a member of this body, in which the European Union now participates, which largely contributes to the financing of the canal.

What is the new composition of the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe Supervisory Board?

In this difficult time for all of us linked to the terrible health crisis that our country is experiencing, the Supervisory Board meeting of March 12 enabled all arrangements to be made to allow the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe to operate, pending the installation meeting of the Supervisory Board of the new local public establishment. In particular, this will make it possible to set up governance within the Supervisory Board (election of the chairman, vice-chairman, and appointment of the members of the Management Board).
