Since obtaining environmental authorization for the sections between Passel in the Oise department and Aubencheul-au-Bac in the Nord department last summer, preliminary work for the canal's construction has begun across the entire area. In the Noyon region, ecological improvements are continuing with the installation of shelters and nesting boxes that will serve as alternative habitats for local wildlife.
Prior to land clearing operations, such as deforestation campaigns, these operations are accompanied by environmental measures to minimize impacts on wildlife and vegetation. These measures are part of the "ERC" approach (Avoid – Reduce – Compensate), which aims to avoid impacts on natural environments, or failing that, to reduce them, and as a last resort, to compensate for them. Many of these measures are therefore integrated into the design and construction phases of the Canal.
