Europe on the SCSNE Supervisory Board

December 20, 2018

Professor Péter Balazs, former European Commissioner, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, and current Coordinator of the North Sea Mediterranean Corridor, was the guest of Xavier Bertrand, Chairman of the Supervisory Board for this Board meeting held in Lille on 20 December 2018. Professor Péter Balazs recalled the support of the European Commission for the joint Seine Scheldt program between Belgium and France, and more particularly the Seine-Nord Europe Canal.

Dominique Riquet, MEP, was also present. This made it possible to take stock of the current discussions between the Parliament and the Council (which brings together the Heads of State or Heads of Government of the Member States) for the next European funding programs from 2021. The outlook shows that the Seine Escaut program, at the heart of which is the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, would be eligible for an increase in the financing rate to 50% of the amount of the work compared to 40% currently. The Seine Escaut program is indeed a major cross-border project to develop the European river transport network.

During this meeting, the Supervisory Board notably adopted the 2019 budget of Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe, as well as a partnership agreement between the State (represented by the DREAL Hauts de France) and the SCSNE for the Canal Accueil system of the Grand Chantier approach. This system aims to prepare the reception of site employees.
