The “Les Nichoirs du Canal” operation is part of the “Avoid-Reduce-Compensate” approach implemented to limit the environmental impact of the construction of the Canal.
When certain impacts cannot be avoided, concrete measures are deployed to reduce them as much as possible, and as a last resort to compensate for them. The "Les Nichoirs du Canal" operation is one of the 50 reduction measures planned in this approach to preserving biodiversity. It makes it possible to temporarily offer birds alternative habitats to the usual hedges or woodlands that may be partly impacted by the construction of the Canal.
Launched in 2022 Compiegne, the operation has already allowed the installation of more than 600 nest boxes in the gardens of local residents living near the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal and schools.
Thanks to this initiative, scientific monitoring continues with the mobilization voluntary participants who have committed to completing a survey each year for five years nesting tracking sheet.
It is also an opportunity to experience beautiful moments of observation of bird nests.
The initiative now extends over the entire route linking Passel, in Oise, to Aubencheul-au-Bac, in the North. A large-scale action with the installation of more than 1 nest boxes by the beginning of March, in order to observe the first nests in the spring.
For this new operation, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company is providing three models of nest boxes adapted to different species: tits, swallows, swifts, but also a bat house.
Beyond the installation of nest boxes, this initiative is a great opportunity to raise awareness among residents about protecting biodiversity by mobilizing them around a participatory project.
In the spring, the first observations will allow measure the benefits of this action and to appreciate theinstallation of new nests.
This operation is also distinguished by its regional dimension et solidary. In fact, the manufacturing market was won by two ESATs (Work Support Establishments and Services) in the Somme, near the future Canal.
The manufacture and shipping of the nest boxes was entrusted to theRoye ESAT, while the printing of the accompanying educational documents was carried out by theESAT d’AllainesAround fifteen disabled workers were able to develop their skills on a very concrete project.
