Preventive archeology work in Ruyaulcourt and Hermies (March 2024)

What works are carried out?

In Ytres, Ruyaulcourt, Hermies and Oisy-le-Verger, work prior to the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is continuing and preventive archeology operations are being carried out in order to ensure knowledge and even the preservation of potentially
present in the soil.

How do they take place?

Firstly, areas of around 10 meters wide located along the Canal route are partially deforested. These operations are supervised by an ecologist and carried out during periods of wildlife inactivity in order to preserve it. This stage of the work is essential to allow archaeologists to then carry out their diagnostics.

How long will the work take*?

Preparatory work begins on March 4 and should last a week in the municipalities of Ruyaulcourt and Hermies.
They take place during working hours of the week and have no impact on traffic.

* Subject to weather conditions and site hazards.

Did you know?

The construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is part of the ERC (avoid-reduce-compensate) approach which frames the project by taking into account the impacts on fauna and flora. 240 hectares of compensatory developments (wetlands, woodlands, ponds, hedges, etc.) are planned in Artois-Cambrésis.
Beyond ecological equivalence, these developments ultimately aim to increase biodiversity in the territory. The details of this program, developed in consultation with local stakeholders, are presented and available for consultation online as part of the Public Environmental Inquiry of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal between Passel and Aubencheul-au-Bac, which takes place from March 04 as of April 02, 2024.
