Territory of Santerre Haute-Somme

The Santerre Haute-Somme territory affirms its rural character at the heart of one of the most productive agricultural areas in France. Industry is also well represented. The Somme valley, a remarkable natural site, irrigates this territory of memory, a major site of the First World War. It accommodates 45 km of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, between Ercheu and Equancourt, crossing 26 municipalities.

FOCUS ON THE TERRITORY

Located in the east of the Somme department, the “Santerre Haute-Somme” territory is already part of a tradition of economic and touristic river navigation thanks to the presence of the Canal du Nord. It is also made up of very varied spaces: agricultural plateau, Somme valley, urban environment and remarkable natural sites.

Nesle and Péronne are the two main towns and will each host an inland port. In total, the territory crossed by the Seine-Nord Europe Canal has nearly 20 inhabitants.

THE ROUTE OF THE CANAL in the TERRITORY

Between Ercheu and Equancourt, the Canal will extend over 45 kilometers, will cross 26 municipalities and will consist of two reaches linked together by a lock. All along the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, no less than 30 engineering structures will be built, including 2 locks located in the town of Allaines and 2 canal bridges, the rest being mainly used for road repairs.

In addition, 16 environmental development sites, representing 350 hectares, will also be undertaken. They will make it possible both to bring the Seine-Nord Europe Canal back to life, to ensure ecological continuity from one bank to the other and to restore degraded natural environments.
