For the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, it is necessary to clear and deforest certain land, which may have an impact on bird habitat. To remedy this, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company implemented a simple solution: providing bird nesting boxes to residents and schools in the communities affected by the construction of the Canal. This provides birds with alternative habitat where they can nest and raise their young. The operation “The Canal Birdhouses” was launched in 14 municipalities of Compiégnois and nearly 600 residents of Compiégnois have agreed to install a nest box in their garden. It will be extended in 2025 on the municipalities crossed by the Canal in Noyonnais, Somme, Pas-de-Calais and the North.
We look forward to your observations for this Season 3. We invite you to fill out the 2024 nesting monitoring sheet via this link. Your observations play an essential role in carrying out the scientific monitoring of the operation. In 2023, more than half of the nest boxes hosted a brood and the most observed species were blue tits and great tits.
