The Seine-Nord Europe Canal is committed to preserving the natural spaces and biodiversity of the region it traverses. Existing fauna, flora, and species habitats are an integral part of the project to ensure its sustainability and development. More than just a waterway, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is designed as a living canal, a welcoming haven for a multitude of species.
To minimize its environmental impact, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is implementing the Avoid-Reduce-Compensate approach, which aims to avoid impacts on natural environments, or failing that, to reduce them, and as a last resort, to compensate for them. Numerous measures are therefore integrated into the design and construction choices for the Canal.
Illustrating this approach, the Canal's route was designed to avoid impacts on sites of significant environmental importance. By spanning the river, the iconic 1,330-meter-long Somme Canal Bridge preserves the rich ecological heritage of the Somme Valley.
Beyond ecological equivalence, the Canal ultimately aims to increase the biodiversity of the area. Its design incorporates various environmental features:
The Seine-Nord Europe Canal is deploying a series of actions aimed at reducing the effects of the construction site on fauna and flora: relocation of plant species and capture / release of amphibians and fish before the works, clearing outside of bird breeding periods, installation of nesting boxes as alternative habitats for birds… but also specific treatment of invasive plants.
The Canal Nesting Boxes operation was launched in 2022 and continues until the end of the works: let's make residents' gardens and schoolyards welcoming and breeding grounds for birds living near the Canal construction sites.
