Among the works currently under construction, the RD40bis bridge which will cross the Oise lateral canal, widened and deepened to become the Seine-Nord Europe Canal at Pimprez, is making great strides! At the start of summer 2024, the metal frame of the bridge was put in place by launching. What does this consist of? Explanations.

This technique allows the frame to be built in the immediate vicinity, on a temporary platform at the rear of an abutment, then put it in place limiting impacts on traffic (here, river). Launching consists of a translation of the frame from its provisional position to its final position. Check out the time-lapse frame-by-frame operation below.

How was the launch carried out?

In the case of the RD40bis bridge, the metal framework was assembled on site, at the rear of the south abutment of the structure. It was equipped with a specific device consisting of a cable and pulley system attached to the deck and operated by winches positioned on the launching platform.

During the preparation phase of its implementation, the structure was placed on stands (temporary supports) composed of a Teflon plate

Un temporary fore-spout (red part) of 49 meters has been added. This, made up of metal beams lighter than the final beams, was installed at the front of the bridge deck to allow facilitate its horizontal movement to its final position and allow it to dock on the supports

Once these elements are in place, the frame, long 78 meters and weighing almost 320 tonnesWas pushed using the winch and pulleys. As it progressed, counterweights were placed at the rear of the frame to allow it to remain in balance before the fore-beak landed on the opposite abutment.

Did you know?

The frame is placed on Teflon plates because you need a low-adherence surface to allow the work to slide horizontally. To help him, soap is used to lubricate the work and thus make it easier to move around!
