Whether it concerns the operation of the project owner, the technical design, the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal or the means used to monitor the construction sites , innovation is evident everywhere.
Beyond the techniques used, the project management itself (find the project history on the website) is part of an innovative approach: for the first time , thanks to the European Union's implementing decision (dated June 27, 2019), a major European project is being managed at the regional level by an ad hoc structure supported by a Region and Departments.
A major European project, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is one of the means to meet the objectives set by the European Commission in terms of European climate policies (Green Deal or Green Deal) and digital transition. The management of this project aims for the overall efficiency of the site in terms of safety, environmental impact, cost and time, as well as delivering an efficient, reliable, water and energy efficient infrastructure.
Innovation is an effective lever for achieving this ambition. The SCSNE Supervisory Board therefore adopted its innovation policy in June 2023 to control and reduce the effects of the construction site on the environment , optimize the construction and operating costs of the structure as well as the completion times of the works.
The Seine-Nord Europe Canal project also represents a new approach to managing major projects, one that is innovative, efficient, and sustainable. It aims, in particular, to facilitate crossing the Canal during and after construction, and to reuse excavated soil and minimize its transport.
From a technical point of view, the teams of the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE) have designed structures that are both efficient and economical in terms of materials, water and energy.
Thus, in Marquion, in the Pas-de-Calais, a prototype lock made it possible to test a solution of thin walls (lock walls) reinforced by earth embankments, in order to limit the use of new materials or materials from elsewhere.
In Cizancourt, in the Somme region, SCSNE tested a natural waterproofing process using fine soils (silts found in the area) and chalk extracted during the excavation of the canal's route . The mixture will be applied to the bottom and banks of the canal to provide waterproofing equivalent to 40 cm of clay.
Thanks to Earth observation by satellites, the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE), with the support of CNES, AIRBUS and DISAITEK, is developing innovative tools enabling even more precise and responsive management of the construction site.
SCSNE has joined the National Institutional System for Shared Access to Satellite Imagery (DINAMIS), a platform for acquiring and disseminating Earth observation space data: the photos taken by the Pléiades satellites, owned by CNES, in orbit at nearly 700 km from Earth, are of very high resolution and allow the construction site to be observed closely and in real time.
These satellite images, initially processed by the IGN (National Geographic Institute), are then used to create analyses, notably through artificial intelligence techniques , and subsequently made available to the teams at the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company (SCSNE) via an online platform. This information allows SCSNE to monitor its construction sites.

In doing so, it will promote the reduction of greenhouse gases, the development of local supply chains, and the growth of recycling sectors.
