What is your role within the Environmental Department of the Canal Company? Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE)?
As an Environment Officer, I act as a link between the project management and the companies responsible for environmental work. and State services, which ensure their compliance with the requirements of the environmental authorization for sector 1.
Can you tell us about some of your daily tasks?
I check the ERC process monitoring documents such as site logs, ecologists' visit sheets, ecological monitoring reports, etc. I therefore have regular exchanges with the project management, but also with various government departments: the Office French Biodiversity Agency (OFB), the Regional Directorate environment, planning and housing (DREAL), the Departmental Directorate of Territories (DDT) in Oise… and I give them a report every month environmental actions carried out.
We participate also to exchanges with elected officials, federations departmental fishing or hunting areas, as well as with the agricultural profession within a steering committee led by the State. It is an important time for dialogue with local stakeholders.

Do you monitor measurements directly in the field?
Yes, I also carry out inspection visits to sites and write observation sheets. In particular, I am responsible for monitoring of compensation ponds in sector 1 by going there about once a month – except in the event of flooding due to a rise in the Oise! I checks the water level, the siltation rate, the presence or
the absence of species characteristic of the environment... This allows us, for example, according to precise criteria, to decide whether a pond is suitable for receiving amphibians captured on neighboring construction sites.
