We tell you everything about wetlands

December 11, 2023

What exactly is a wetland?

We often hear about them for their great ecological wealth but without really knowing how to recognize them.

A wetland is characterized by the presence of water of course, regularly in the ground, and possibly also on the surface, but at a shallow depth.

These wetlands can be made up of varied typical vegetation such as woodlands, meadows or even marshes.

And why are they so important?

Because they perform many functions. They play a role in hydraulic and hydrological regulation and thus limit floods and droughts. Wetlands also contribute to water purification. Finally, they represent habitats very appreciated by many species of fauna and flora.

What is the Canal’s program for wetlands?

As part of the “Avoid, Reduce, Compensate” approach applied to the Canal, wetlands represent a major preservation issue and a major part of the compensation program.

More than 420 hectares of wetlands will be restored or rehabilitated around the Canal, making it possible to recreate old wetlands that have disappeared (including old gravel pits) or to improve the functionality of existing environments.

Initial developments have been implemented since 2017 in Oise, in Somme in 2021 and at the end of 2023 in Nord and Pas-de-Calais. They will continue in parallel with the construction of the Canal, particularly in the Oise valley, Noyonnais and the valleys of the Somme, Ingon, Tortille, Sensée and Agache.
