The Seine-Nord Europe Canal's environmental approach is supported by the Environmental Observatory, an independent scientific council.
The Environmental Observatory has been created in 2018 for the Seine-Nord Europe Canal in order to anticipate and monitor the effects of the project on the environment during and up to 10 years after its constructionHe advises the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company for achieve environmental exemplarity in the areas of water, biodiversity and landscape. It assesses the effectiveness of the measures environmental protection and compensation measures put in place and proposes new ones if necessary.

The Environmental Observatory is made up of independent experts and representatives of approved environmental associations (Picardie Nature, fishing and hunting federations, etc.), specialized public bodies (French Biodiversity Agency, Bureau of Geological and Mining Research), the State (Regional Directorate for the Environment and Housing Development) and local authorities. It is chaired by Guy Fradin, honorary general engineer of bridges, water and forests and alternate governor of the World Water Council.
