The Nesting Boxes of the Canal

The "Canal Nesting Boxes" operation is part of the biodiversity preservation initiative led by the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company. Launched in March 2022 in the Compiègne area, it has been extended since the end of 2024 to the Noyon area, the Somme, the Pas-de-Calais and the Nord.

Objective: to make residents' gardens and school yards places of reception and reproduction of birds living near the Canal construction sites.

Nesting boxes as alternative habitats

Construction work on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal sometimes requires clearing and deforestation which can impact bird habitats (hedges, thickets, edges, woodlots). To reduce this nuisance as much as possible, the “Les Nichoirs du Canal” operation allows birds to set up their nests in nesting boxes, located in the gardens of the inhabitants of the neighboring municipalities of the future Canal.

Which species will nest?

Do you know the Song Thrush? The European Goldfinch? The Starling?
These birds are among species found along the route of the Canal Seine-North Europe.

Explore in the photographic atlas of birds these species that surround us, and their specific song!

If you have installed a bat houseYou can discreetly observe its arrival at dusk, between March and November, when the bats come out to feed on insects. You can also check for their presence by looking for traces of guano under the roost, without disturbing them.

More than 1800 nest boxes installed along the route!

Initially deployed in the CompiegneThe operation has appealed to many nature lovers, with more than 600 nest boxes installed from 2022. Since 2024, the Noyon region, the Somme, the Pas-de-Calais and the North were also able to participate in the operation, with over 1,200 additional nest boxes and shelters installed in gardens and schoolyards. Every year, for five years, amateur ornithologists monitor the species hosted in their nest box, thus contributing directly to the scientific work related to the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal.
