Pays Noyonnais: the developments of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal specified

Published January 15 2021

The studies and exchanges with the actors of the territory (the mayors, the Community of communes of the Pays Noyonnais and the agricultural profession in particular) throughout the year 2020 made it possible to specify the route and the integration measures of the Canal Seine- Northern Europe, in particular in:

  • limiting the footprint of the structure and therefore the impact on agricultural land and the natural environment;
  • best adapting road restorations to the needs of the territory;
  • improving the landscape integration of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal with the construction of ecological banks, plantations, or even gentle paths along the canal.

In detail, the technical optimizations made to the project in the Noyonnais are:

  • raising the section of the canal (the reach) by 1,50 m between the two Noyonnais locks to limit earth movements by 1,1 million m3 ;
  • adjusting the route to avoid impacts on the Mont-Renaud commercial area;
  • the detailed definition of road restorations;
  • moving the turning basin and the quay of the inner port of Catigny to the south;
  • moving the Campagne lock to Catigny, to reduce the footprint on agricultural land (-10,2 ha) and the necessary earthworks (-1,8 million m3 );
  • detailed integration work on the outskirts of Catigny (crossings, paths, landscaping, restoration of the sources of the Mève);
  • an optimization of the surfaces and the location of the land for the reception of the surplus materials, which will be given priority after their development to agriculture, and failing that, valued in landscaped areas.

Many aspects of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal project will still need to be clarified during the next phase of studies in 2021 and 2022: development of the banks and access to the canal, landscape and environmental integration, organization of the works... All this will continue to to be conducted in close consultation with the territory and its inhabitants to make the Canal a success together in the Noyonnais.
