Piezometers: continuation of the survey campaign for the network in place

Published on 3 April 2020
To build a canal, it is necessary to understand the functioning of surface water but also of groundwater in the territory and to anticipate the potential effects that the project would have, in order to take the appropriate measures to avoid and reduce the impacts. To know the groundwater, piezometers are used (see photo). These piezometers will also make it possible, when the canal is commissioned, to analyze the effect of the canal on the groundwater tables in the territory. A network of piezometers had been set up by Voies Navigables de France (VNF) as part of the first design studies for the Seine-Nord Europe Canal. The Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe is taking over the monitoring of these piezometers and has therefore commissioned the Hydrogeotechnical study office – Geaupole to check the condition and operation of these structures. This recognition campaign was carried out between December 9 and 21, 2019. This inventory made it possible to resume the piezometric monitoring since the beginning of spring, it will continue until December 2020. Concretely, Hydrogeotechnics – Geaupole employees will periodically make field trips to record the levels of the piezometers. They carry the prefectoral decree authorizing entry into private property; they will produce it if requested by an owner or operator. If you would like more information about these investigations, you can ask your questions at the following email address: piezometer@scsne.fr. The presence of these devices gives the right to compensation for the benefit of farmers of cultivated plots. In the event that you are awaiting payment in this respect, you can send your requests either by email to the address piezometer@scsne.fr, or by post by writing to the following address: Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe, 134 rue de Beauvais, 60280 Margny-lès-Compiègne.

Definition

What is a piezometer? A piezometer is a non-exploited structure allowing the level of a water table to be measured at a given point. It can be a work built by man (well, borehole, gravel pit, etc.), or a natural point (source, sinkhole, cave, etc.).
