First groundbreaking in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region

On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the first sod was turned at the Oisy-le-Verger lock, marking a significant milestone in the Seine-Nord Europe Canal project, with the start of the first major construction projects in the Artois and Cambrésis regions. The event brought together all the project partners, including Xavier Bertrand, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SCSNE and President of the Hauts-de-France Region. 

Thanks to all the stakeholders involved, the Canal will contribute to economic development for the territories it crosses as well as for the Seine-Escaut Network.

Alongside him for this symbolic moment, and alongside the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SCSNE, Jérôme Dezobry, and its members Vincent Hulot and Séverine Riche, all the partners from across the region, including Belgium, were present: the European Commission, represented by Paweł Wojciechowski, European Coordinator of the North Sea-Rhine-Mediterranean Corridor; the French State, notably represented by Bertrand Gaume, Prefect of the Hauts-de-France region and the Nord department; the Presidents of the Nord and Pas-de-Calais Departments, Christian Poiret and Jean-Claude Leroy; the European Investment Bank (EIB) , represented by its Vice-President, Ambroise Fayolle; the mayors of Oisy-le-Verger and Aubencheul-au-Bac , Marie-Christine Guenot and Michel Prettre; the Walloon Minister responsible for mobility, François Desquesnes; and the Flemish representatives of the Network Seine-Escaut De Vlaamse Waterweg as well as the partners of the Grand Chantier initiative and the Seine-Escaut Alliance.

A visit for local residents

One hundred and fifty residents of Oisy-le-Verger and Aubencheul-au-Bac were able to discover the construction site of the lock being built near their homes, learn about the project's progress and its future stages. It was an important moment of sharing and exchange with local residents!
