Meeting “Succeed together in your recruitment on the Canal”

February 15, 2024

On Wednesday, February 7, 2024, the meeting "Succeeding Together in Your Recruitment on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Construction Site" took place in Arras. It was co-organized by the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company, the partners of the Grand Chantier initiative (France Travail HDF, the CCI HDF, the Hauts-de-France Region, and the Departments of Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Aisne, and Val d'Oise), and the Regional Federation of Public Works. More than 90 public works companies and stakeholders in employment and training participated in this event. The objective? To share the upcoming workforce needs for the Canal and prepare together for major recruitment campaigns.

An exceptional device for exceptional labor needs

The Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe (SCSNE) shared these figures which did not leave the participants indifferent: 6000 people mobilized at the height of the construction site and a recruitment need of around 3000 people in various trades of machine operators, formwork carpenters, roadworks masons, etc., not counting the needs in the transport, security, accommodation or catering sectors.

Figures which allow companies wishing to respond to Canal calls for tenders to already prepare their teams for skills development or recruitment needs.

To help businesses meet their needs, SCSNE and its partners presented them with the Grand Chantier initiative . This exceptional program offers businesses an integrated range of services to support their recruitment and training efforts. Among other things, they receive support in implementing the social inclusion clause through economic activity (CIAE) , which is integrated into the Canal's public contracts and promotes local employment.

very rich feedback on other major recruitments

The Grand Paris project, the Lyon-Turin Euralpin Tunnel, the Tours-Bordeaux high-speed rail line , and the automotive industry with its gigafactories in Northern France— these are all projects that have impacted their respective regions with major recruitment campaigns, creating between 2000 and over 9000 jobs . Participants were able to discover best practices implemented by stakeholders, companies, and partners in recruitment, integration, training, and diversity.

The speakers present emphasized the importance of adapting training programs to target audiences and of companies' commitment to these recruitment processes.

These inspiring testimonials will help SCSNE and its partners finalize their process for upcoming major recruitment campaigns on the Canal. Next steps: thematic workshops with participating companies to explore specific aspects of the process, followed by a presentation of the key principles at the next "Canal Entreprises Regional Meeting" scheduled for June 2024.
