Home > News and agenda > Start of main works between Compiègne and Passel
Between Compiègne and Passel, the works for the Seine-Nord Europe Canal (CSNE) focus on the construction of the sections of the future Canal located upstream and downstream of the Montmacq – Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt lockThe operations include, in particular the digging, sealing of the work and the development of 12 km of lagoon or wetland banks.
To allow the Canal to be integrated, several modifications are necessary, such as rescindations of the Oise at Pimprez or Le Plessis-Brion. These involve locally reshaping the river's course to freeing up the space needed for the CanalThe development of the confluences of the Oise, Aisne and Aronde rivers is also planned, as well as the construction of...hydraulic structures such as Pimprez spillway or many siphons to allow the passage of waterways under the Canal.
The project also includes the construction of four bridges on the RD 81, RD 15, RD 40 and RD 48 and of three bridges on the Thourotte – Montmacq local road to cross the Oise, the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal and the lateral canal to the Oise.
The contract for the construction of the first 18 kilometers of the Canal was awarded in mid-April 2026 to a group consisting of the companies Spie batignolles valérian, an entity of Spie batignolles travaux publics (lead contractor), NGE and Besix.
After an administrative preparation phase, the first operations will start across the territory this summer with several preparatory steps, prior to the actual start of the work.
Before the start of the earthworks and construction of the structures, the company will prepare the main living quarters, intended to house some of the staff deployed on the construction sites (engineers, management, tradespeople, etc.) in Choisy-au-Bac. The secondary work bases will also be installed near each structure.
Alongside these installations, Construction access roads will be laid out on both sides of the Canal route, to allow the movement of earthmoving equipment, and material storage areas will be prepared. In certain areasIncluding
on the side of the Muid Loops or between Ribécourt-Dreslincourt and Passel, where the lateral canal is widened and deepened, The construction access roads will be built on the towpath and will intersect pedestrian walkways.. As well, some walking routes may no longer be accessible.
Once the tracks are prepared, the construction of the structures and the digging of the Canal, section by section, can begin.
During the canal excavation operations, The excavated materials are stored. on areas located in the immediate vicinity of the construction site. These materials are sorted according to their characteristics, before being either re-employed within the framework of the construction project, either valuedi.e evacuated towards suitable sectors.
Prior to any storage on these platforms, the topsoil is removed and preserved. It will be reused after the work is completed to ensure the restoration of the sites concerned.
After storage and once dried, the materials are removed by truck, train, or boat . Several work platforms will be created along the edges of the storage areas to facilitate their removal.
The use of river transport is promoted by the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe, which includes a modal shift clause in works contracts , thus favoring the supply or removal of materials partly by boat or train, rather than by road, thereby guaranteeing a reduction in CO2 emissions from the construction site and limiting impacts.
After the preparatory work, the construction of certain structures will begin during the autumn of 2026 and the winter of 2027* and is subject to adjustment during the execution phase.
These operations will be specified as close as possible to the start date, in the areas concerned by their implementation.
The safety of people and infrastructure is the absolute priority of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company, on the Canal construction sites and in its surroundings.
In the Oise region, hundreds of women and men are working daily to shape the future Seine-Nord Europe Canal.
A construction project of this scale involves powerful machinery, complex work and constantly changing environments.
Anticipating risks, training teams, coordinating interventions, securing the areas around construction sites: Everything is being done to protect local residents and construction workers.
We are all responsible for safety and we thank you for your vigilance near construction sites.
