Canal progress in the Somme by 2025

Along the route of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, preparatory operations took place in 2025 before the launch of the main works in the Santerre-Haute Somme sector.

The signing of several works contracts

In the Somme, Several contracts for the Seine-Nord Europe Canal have already been awarded., in particular for environmental improvements and temporary roads. All the calls for tenders have been launched: they concern the Louette water supply reservoir, the Allaines lock and the junction lock with the Canal du Nord and the construction of the Canal itself through the so-called "TOARCE" contract, for Earthworks, Engineering Structures, Restoration of Communications and Waterproofing.

 

Overview of the preparatory work

On the 45 km stretch of the Canal in the Santerre Haute-Somme region, preparatory work is scheduled to continue until the end of 2027. This work includes:

  • the pursuit of preventive archaeology ;
  • la release of construction site areas through deforestation at various points along the route;
  • des diversions of several networks work has been carried out on the right-of-way of the Canal. In Nesle (photo opposite), this notably concerns the relocation of gas networks by NaTran (formerly GRTgaz) as well as the repositioning of water retention and infiltration basins by SNCF Réseau in preparation for the construction of a new section of railway track above the future Canal.

Environmental work

As part of the compensatory measures, the SCSNE launched several at the end of 2025 environmental work in the Santerre Haute-Somme region.

  • À Villers-Carbonnel and in the Omignon valley : restoration of wetlands, renaturalization of riverbanks, planting of trees, removal of invasive species,
  • À Cléry-sur-Somme, Biaches and Péronne : ecological improvements along waterways and in the wooded areas of the Pont-Canal sector,
  • À Étricourt-Manancourt and Moislains : creation of six ponds to recreate habitats suitable for amphibians.

Walkers and residents have access to information panels located in the towns of Biaches, Cléry-sur-Somme and Saint-Christ-Briost, allowing them to discover the environmental measures implemented as part of the project.

Teams present on the ground

In 2025, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company engaged with local residents, notably at the Nesle Foal Fair and the Brioche Festival in Moislains. These information stands provided an opportunity to interact directly with the public, answer questions, and provide updates on the project's progress.

The opening of the Canal House in Péronne The opening in October 2025 marks a further step in this dialogue process. This new dedicated space offers local residents, stakeholders, and partners a place for information, meetings, and exchanges. Regular office hours for the SCSNE teams are organized regularly. By the end of 2025, more than 330 people had already visited the House.

Outlook 2026

In 2026, preparatory work will continue throughout the year. This will notably involve the development of the Allaines works quay (in progress), then some quayside works in Languevoisin-Quiquery, Rouy-le-Petit and Péronne according to a plan currently being finalized.

De new ecological developments (20 ha) must also begin in the autumn in the Ingon valley (Herly, Curchy, Nesle and Languevoisin-Quiquery).

And then, a major step illustrating the project's progress, the consortium of companies tasked with designing and building the Somme Canal BridgeThe emblematic structure of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, 1,3 km long, which will allow crossing the Somme valley while limiting environmental impacts, will be designated at the end of February.
