Thanks to Earth observation via satellites, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company (SCSNE), in partnership with CNES, Airbus, and Disaitek, is developing innovative tools to enable even more precise and responsive project management . The use of satellite imagery and artificial intelligence opens up new possibilities for the construction and monitoring of the structures. The Seine-Nord Europe Canal is thus becoming a laboratory for innovation.
A major European project, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal is one of the means to meet the objectives set by the European Commission in terms of European climate policies (Green Deal) and digital transition. The management of this project aims at the overall efficiency of the project in terms of safety, environmental impact, cost and deadline, as well as delivering an efficient, reliable, water and energy-efficient infrastructure.
Innovation is an effective lever for achieving this ambition. The SCSNE Supervisory Board therefore adopted its innovation policy in June 2023 to control and reduce the effects of the construction site on the environment , optimize the construction and operating costs of the structure as well as the completion times of the works.
As part of this innovation policy, and to ensure precise and regular monitoring of the work, SCSNE has joined the National Institutional System for Shared Access to Satellite Imagery (DINAMIS) . This is a platform for acquiring and disseminating Earth observation data: the photos taken by the Pléiades satellites, owned by CNES, orbiting at nearly 700 km above the Earth, are of very high resolution and allow for close, real-time observation of the construction site. This platform is dedicated to institutional users for research, development, innovation, and environmental monitoring purposes.
To exploit these satellite images, SCSNE is working with the start-up DISAITEK, which specializes in remote sensing and artificial intelligence. A period of experimentation, which began in 2023, has demonstrated its feasibility and interest: the process consists first of all in determining the programming of the satellites to target specific observation locations, on the route of the Canal. Then in the recovery of the ordered images, a first level of processing of which was done by the IGN (National Geographic Institute). They are then exploited by DISAITEK to transform them into analyses, notably using artificial intelligence techniques, and then made available to the teams of the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe through a platform accessible online. This information allows SCSNE to monitor its construction sites.
Among this information, we find:
The National Institutional System for Shared Access to Satellite Imagery (DINAMIS) is a platform for acquiring and disseminating Earth observation spatial data from the Data Terra Research Infrastructure, dedicated primarily to French institutional users. Its objective is to facilitate access to and develop the institutional use of spatial data within the framework of programs of general interest , such as the environment, education, or the development of innovative services.
DINAMIS provides access to a bouquet of images sent by the Pléiades satellites. These images are marketed by Airbus Defense & Space, with preferential conditions for institutional players in order to encourage the use of Earth observation data.
This innovation opens up real prospects for the construction and management of major works: monitoring of earthworks, safety of hydraulic works and dams... many applications are still to be imagined, and will allow the construction sector to be projected into the digital and artificial intelligence era.
“We are always looking to be more efficient and responsive in monitoring construction sites. The use of satellite Earth observation data is a first for a linear infrastructure construction site! This dynamic opens a new era in monitoring the progress of construction projects and their impacts on the territory, allowing us to have precise, up-to-date and usable data to strengthen and improve their management.”
Franck Rousseau, Director of Earthworks and Innovation at SCSNE
