Begun in September 2022 in Montmacq in the Oise, the Oise resplitting operation is now nearing completion after nearly 2 years of work. The Oise River is gradually reaching its new bed, slightly further east.
The challenge was to divert the river bed for almost four kilometres to free up space for the construction of the Canal, while recreating a natural environment similar to the original one.
The work was monitored daily to ensure that this new bed of the Oise respected the natural characteristics of the river defined during the studies, such as its slope. It was essential to recreate the natural meanders to maintain the flow conditions.
After this first stage, work will continue to create vegetation characteristic of the banks of the Oise with more diverse environments than before, favorable to biodiversity.
The development of the new banks of the Oise was decided in consultation with the municipality and residents of Montmacq during workshops organized in 2019 and 2020. In particular, they were able to choose between various scenarios for planting and using the banks, to restore a living environment that meets the aspirations of residents after the work.
The new bed is dug to the east of the current Oise. Water from the groundwater quickly comes to the surface. Riprap and geotextile are put in place to stabilize the newly dug banks.
Connections are opened between the two beds. The river gradually borrows its new bed.
The old arms are cut by dams. The aquatic fauna is fished and then released in the new bed.
The spoil from the digging is used to backfill the old bed pending the development of the Canal. They are also used to make the railings of bridges during construction; 3 bridges on the RD 66 between Montmacq and Cambronne-lès-Ribécourt and bridge on the RD 40 bis in Pimprez.
