A new sequence of environmental works is completed at Bois Durieux (62)

Ahead of the construction work on the Seine-Nord Europe Canal, various environmental works are being carried out in Artois and Cambrésis, such as the first interventions carried out in Aubigny-au-Bac (59) and Oisy-le-Verger (62) in autumn 2023.

New developments, which have recently been carried out on the site, are being completed at the start of this year.

Located across the communes of Vélu, Bertincourt and Neuville-Bourjonval, Bois Durieux (owned by the Pas-de-Calais Department) is made up of four separate wooded areas, spread over an area of ​​76 hectares:

  • The Bois de Montplaisir, in the commune of Vélu (11,4 ha)
  • The Doignies Trail in Bertincourt (30 ha)
  • Bois Savary in Bertincourt (approximately 16,2 ha)
  • Le Bois Richard, in the commune of Neuville-Bourjonval (18,9 ha)

The site has been the subject of environmental works from the end of November 2024, made by Eden 62, an organization (mixed union) commissioned by the Pas-de-Calais Department to maintain and develop sensitive natural areas. Their missions consist of protect, develop these natural spaces and raise awareness among the population about preserving nature.

At Bois Durieux, the objectives of the developments were to diversify habitats and create spaces favorable to biodiversity. Concretely, the environmental compensation carried out on the site is reflected in different measures:

  • Restore favorable natural habitats for target species frequenting hedgerows and forest edges;
  • Create a network of ponds within the Chemin des Doignies entity,
  • Install bat shelters;
  • Diversify woodlands;
  • Delineate a senescence island* to avoid any forest exploitation for a minimum period of 99 years, to encourage the reception of species characteristic of old forests

*area deliberately kept as is so that vegetation can develop spontaneously until the trees completely collapse.

During the construction work, and in order to preserve the site, the removal of some felled trees was carried out using animal traction.

SCSNE will undertake new environmental works in Artois and Cambrésis from the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to the award of the corresponding contracts.
