The actors

Owner of the project, the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe is a local public institution piloted by the Hauts-de-France Region and the Departments of Nord, Oise, Pas-de-Calais and Somme who finance the project in partnership with the State and with the support of Europe. A veritable "conductor", he represents a unique case of decentralization of a major European project on a territorial scale.

The European Union has made this major project a essential link in the North Sea – Mediterranean river corridor. Its commitment took shape on October 17, 2013 through a joint declaration in Tallinn (Estonia) by the European Commissioner for Transport and the French, Flemish, Walloon and Dutch ministers. It was reinforced by the adoption, on June 27, 2019, of an implementing decision in 2019 which sets the operational stages of the completion of the link by 2030.

The agricultural profession and economic and industrial players support the dynamics of the project through the Major project approach. Responsible for the development of inland ports, under the leadership of the Hauts-de-France Region, local authorities are also essential partners of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal.
