The renaturation of the Tortilla

An emblematic development project for the Canal

The Tortille, a tributary of the Somme, represents a local environmental and cultural heritage that must be preserved.
It extends from Allaines to the north of Étricourt-Manancourt, finding its original sources in the Ytres tablecloth.
Highly artificialized with the arrival of the Canal du Nord, it will be completely rehabilitated and renatured.

Its renaturation is one of the Canal's major ecological development projects. : the environmental works linked to it aim to restore water quality and enrich biodiversity, while maintaining its hydraulic neutrality, particularly when crossing Moislains.

A renatured watercourse

Partly repositioned in the current bed of the Canal du Nord, which will be filled in, the Tortille will once again have a natural watercourse profile, with variations in flow and temperature during the year. The river will continue to be fed, as is the case today, by the chalk tablecloth via the Ruyaulcourt tunnel.

In addition, it will be fed by its natural watersheds which will increase the surface area of its impluvium by approximately 16km². This will allow the return of quality water and a greater flow, variable according to the seasons and the height of the water table or following rain episodes.

Renaturation also results in the creation of a meandering minor bed within a wet major bed over 5,9 kilometers.

Finally, the development of the banks will perpetuate natural river dynamics, promoting biodiversity with the creation of erosion and deposit zones.

All these arrangements will also allow him to restore all its fish character.

Ultimately, they will become a new natural space marker of the territory, ideal for practicing recreational activities in the great outdoors.

A rediscovered biodiversity

The renaturation of the Tortille embodies the particular attention paid by the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe to biodiversity and the living environment. It will be accompanied by the restoration of a mosaic of dry or humid, open or wooded environments favorable to local fauna and flora. The renaturation project therefore represents an opportunity to diversify the environments and thus improve the ecological state of the sector, thanks to:

  • La restoration of wetlands particularly beneficial to the kingfisher for example;
  • THEimprovement of water quality and design of spawning areas in favor of different fish species : brown trout, minnow, Planer lamprey, sculpin, loach. Their installation will be favored by the diversity of habitats created by the renaturation of the Tortille, which will be closer to a watercourse welcoming salmonids;
  • The removal of the Tortille siphon – which allowed its passage under the Canal du Nord – is planned, essential for fish and sediment ecological continuity.

All these developments ensure ecological continuity connecting the different natural environments together, from the south to the north of the Tortille valley.

Optimized hydraulic operation

The hydraulic rehabilitation of the Tortille was designed to promote sufficient flow all year round. Water management systems will take flood phenomena into account and ensure the hydraulic neutrality of the developments.
