A works quay in Allaines

Published on 4 April 2023

Why a works dock in Allaines?

In order to promote supply to the site by river, and thus limit truck traffic, the construction of the Canal Seine-Nord Europe is based on the current navigable infrastructure of the Canal du Nord. Thus, the Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company will develop several quays dedicated to the work of the future Canal located near the Canal du Nord.

In Santerre Haute-Somme, the first of them will be built in Allaines. This may in particular serve the digging site of the Canal and those of the various structures built on and around the route : the Louette water reserve, road restorations, the Allaines lock and the junction lock with the Canal du Nord.

The characteristics of the work dock

The works quay will measure 100 meters long. It is designed to accommodate Freycinet (38,5 m) and double Freycinet (77 m) type boats, the most common on the Canal du Nord, but also certain convoys that can reach almost 90 m in length, the maximum size of the locks. of the current channel. Near the wharf, a platform of 100 meters by 30 meters will be built. of a 8 ton storage capacity, it will make it possible to carry out the operations of loading and unloading of construction materials.

What does the work consist of?

Earthworks are planned on the bank of the Canal du Nord and the buffer platform. Some work will have to be done dry. Thus, the level of the Canal du Nord will be lowered and a cofferdam (oblique wall allowing to dry a bank of the Canal, see illustration below) will be in place for the duration of the works.

The quay construction work is scheduled between June and December 2023. The main river part of the quay developments will take place during the Canal du Nord shutdown (closure) scheduled by Voies navigables de France, from September 15 to October 16, 2023, to carry out work necessary for the maintenance of the Canal du Nord. . There will therefore be no hindrance to navigation. This period of unemployment will allow the cofferdams to be installed.

The works quay will then be in service throughout the works between 2024 and 2030.
